A vehicle registered for the Electoral Commission in Manafwa District has been impounded by the Uganda Revenue Authority (URA) Eastern Region for allegedly ferrying smuggled white flour from Kenya.

The vehicle was intercepted along the Mbale-Tororo highway at the Mbale URA checkpoint on January 7, 2026, along with over 30 cartons of Dunia white flour.

URA Manager Eastern Region, James Maloba, confirmed the incident, stating the vehicle is parked at the URA checkpoint in Mbale.

Gilbert Meru, Manafwa District Registrar, claimed his driver took the vehicle without his knowledge. However, locals are calling for Meru’s transfer, citing concerns the vehicle might be used for electoral malpractices, such as transporting stuffed ballot papers.
