Man Arrested with 14.5kg of Pangolin Scales

The Uganda Wildlife Authority has reiterated its commitment to combating wildlife trafficking, noting that pangolins remain among the most endangered and heavily trafficked species globally.

A joint operation by the Uganda Wildlife Authority (UWA) and the Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF) has led to the arrest of a 36-year-old man found in possession of illegal pangolin scales in Kiryandongo District.

The suspect, identified as Okech Philip Jonathan, was apprehended on March 22 at around 10:30 a.m. at a UPDF checkpoint in Karuma. He was traveling on a bodaboda to Karuma Centre, where he reportedly intended to sell the scales.

According to authorities, a search conducted at the checkpoint revealed 14.5 kilograms of pangolin scales concealed in a yellow sack hidden inside a bag.

During preliminary questioning, Okech told investigators that he had traveled from Kampala by Gateway bus to Lamdin, where he had initially planned to complete the sale. However, he later changed his route after being informed that the buyer was staying in a guest room in Karuma.

Officials say the suspect is currently in custody as investigations continue to identify other individuals connected to the illegal wildlife trade.
