However, the latest directive instructs PLU members-elect to instead support candidates to be presented by President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni for both positions.

The Patriotic League of Uganda (PLU) has officially withdrawn its earlier endorsement of candidates for the top leadership positions in Uganda’s Parliament, according to a statement released on May 12, 2026.

In the communication signed by General Secretary David Kabanda, the organization confirmed that its earlier support for Rt. Hon. Anita Among as Speaker and Rt. Hon. Thomas Tayebwa as Deputy Speaker has been revoked with immediate effect.

The decision follows guidance reportedly issued by the Chairman of the PLU, Gen. Muhoozi Kainerugaba, who had initially directed PLU-aligned Members of Parliament to support the two leaders during preparations for the 12th Parliament.

However, the latest directive instructs PLU members-elect to instead support candidates to be presented by President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni for both positions.

The statement further emphasized that PLU members are expected to operate under the guidance and instructions of their Chairman at all times, reinforcing the organization’s internal command structure.

The sudden policy shift is expected to generate political discussion as Parliament prepares for leadership elections in the incoming 12th session, with attention now turning to the candidates likely to be endorsed by the President.

Neither Rt. Hon. Anita Among nor Rt. Hon. Thomas Tayebwa had publicly responded to the withdrawal at the time of publication.
