Chief Justice Flavian Zeija has declared National Resistance Movement candidate Jacob Marksons Oboth-Oboth the Speaker of Uganda’s 12th Parliament following a decisive victory in the parliamentary election held at the Kololo Ceremonial Grounds.
Oboth-Oboth emerged winner in a race contested by three candidates, defeating Paul Mwiru of the National Unity Platform and Norbert Mao of the Democratic Party.
Announcing the results, Chief Justice Zeija said a total of 519 legislators participated in the exercise, with three ballots declared spoilt.
“Oboth-Oboth has secured 441 votes, Paul Mwiru 60 votes and Mao 15 votes,” Zeija declared while presiding over the election.
The ceremony was attended by President Yoweri Museveni alongside several senior government officials, Members of Parliament and invited guests.
Following the election of the Speaker, Parliament is now expected to proceed with the election of the Deputy Speaker. The ruling NRM has fronted Thomas Tayebwa for the position, alongside 15 other contenders, including former Security Minister Henry Tumukunde.
