Lugazi Diocese has announced arrangements for this year’s Uganda Martyrs’ Day celebrations, confirming that the June 3 commemorations will be held at diocesan and parish level instead of the traditional national gathering at Namugongo.

In a communication dated May 25, 2026, issued from the Bishop’s Office, the diocese informed priests, religious leaders and Christians that all parishes and sub-parishes would follow the normal Sunday programme during the celebrations.

The statement further directed deaneries that had already organised special programmes to continue with their planned activities.

According to the circular issued on behalf of Bishop Christopher Kakooza, the diocese will adopt the theme and scripture readings earlier prepared by Kasese Diocese for the national celebrations that had initially been scheduled to take place at Namugongo.

The theme for this year’s celebrations is: “Christ is Alive in You and Me” drawn from Galatians 2:19-20.

The selected readings include 2 Maccabees 7:1-2, 9-14; Romans 8:8-18; and John 12:24-26.

The diocese also encouraged Christians to reflect on living Christ-like lives capable of drawing people back to God through good example.

“To help us understand better the theme, remember the Luganda hymn which ends with ‘ffe Kristu alabika.’ We are his hands, mouth and eyes,” the communication stated.

The message wished believers successful celebrations as preparations for the annual commemoration continue across the country.

President Yoweri Museveni postponed the 2026 Uganda Martyrs’ Day celebrations at Namugongo Martyrs Shrine over fears of a possible Ebola outbreak linked to eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo.

Held annually on June 3, the pilgrimage to Namugongo on the outskirts of Kampala attracts hundreds of thousands of Christian faithful from across East and Central Africa.
