Major General Don William Nabasa, a senior officer in the Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF), has been freed after spending two months in detention at the Kasenyi military facility.

The development was confirmed by Chief of Defence Forces Gen. Muhoozi Kainerugaba, who announced on X that he had decided to release the senior officer and withdraw all charges following what he described as a lengthy meeting with Nabasa.

Gen. Muhoozi also commended Maj. Gen. Nabasa for his years of service, highlighting his contribution to the UPDF since he joined the army in 1998.

Nabasa’s release brings to a close weeks of uncertainty surrounding his situation after he was detained in March together with several other senior military officers.

Before his detention, Maj. Gen. Nabasa served as Joint Staff Policy and Strategy. He had also previously commanded the UPDF Third Infantry Division based in Moroto. Throughout the period of his detention, military authorities did not publicly disclose the reasons behind his arrest.

The case attracted significant attention within defence and security circles because of Nabasa’s senior position and his involvement in shaping military policy and strategy.

Abaho previously worked as Commissioner of Citizenship and Passport Management at the Directorate of Citizenship and Immigration Control before he was recalled.

The decision to free Nabasa is expected to calm tensions within sections of the UPDF leadership as the military continues with internal disciplinary and reform efforts.

Authorities have not released details regarding the allegations that initially led to his detention.
