“The 2026 Masaza Football Tournament has begun. We look forward to seeing more talent nurtured among our youth and greater unity promoted among the Kabaka’s people,” Katikkiro said.

The 2026 Buganda Masaza Cup has officially got underway at Mubende NTC Stadium on Saturday, with defending champions Buweekula hosting Kyadondo in an entertaining opening fixture that ended in a goal less draw.

The tournament has been formally launched by Buganda Kingdom Prime Minister Charles Peter Mayiga, who has represented the Kabaka and marked the opening occasion by signing a commemorative football before kickoff.

As reigning champions, Buweekula earned the right to host the opening match in line with the competition’s regulations. The opening ceremony attracted county chiefs, sponsors, kingdom officials and hundreds of football enthusiasts who gathered to witness the start of another highly anticipated Masaza Cup campaign.

 

The match itself lived up to expectations, with both teams producing a spirited performance in front of a lively crowd. While neither side managed to secure victory, the contest showcased the competitive spirit that has made the Masaza Cup one of the most celebrated football tournaments in Buganda.

Speaking during the opening ceremony, Mayiga highlighted the tournament’s role in nurturing young talent and promoting unity among the people of Buganda.

 

“The 2026 Masaza Football Tournament has begun. We look forward to seeing more talent nurtured among our youth and greater unity promoted among the Kabaka’s people,” Katikkiro said.

 

The Katikkiro also praised supporters and players for maintaining discipline throughout the match, noting that the atmosphere on and off the pitch reflected the values the kingdom seeks to promote through sport.

“Although the opening match between Buweekula and Kyadondo ended in a draw, it was an excellent game both on the pitch and among the supporters. There was no violence or disorder whatsoever, and that is what we want. Let football be won on the field, with good conduct leading everything else,” Mayiga added.

 

He concluded by wishing all participating teams a successful campaign and expressed hope that the tournament would continue to inspire excellence among Buganda’s youth.

 

With the 2026 season now officially underway, attention turns to the remaining fixtures as counties across Buganda battle for the coveted Masaza Cup crown.
