MBALE CITY — Police in Mbale City have launched investigations into the death of a 19-year-old Senior Five student who was electrocuted while ironing her clothes in a rented house in Namabasa Zone, Industrial City Division.
The deceased, identified as Evaline Adongo, was a student at Gill Sherlock Memorial Secondary School. She was staying with fellow students in a rented apartment located in Namabasa Zone 3A, Doko Ward.
According to Elgon Regional Police spokesperson SP Rogers Taitika, the incident happened at around 5:45 a.m. on Thursday, June 18, 2026.
Preliminary investigations indicate that Adongo was ironing her clothes in the sitting room of the apartment when she came into contact with an electric current and died instantly.
“The Regional Police have commenced thorough investigations to establish the exact circumstances that led to this unfortunate loss of life,” Taitika said.
The incident was reported to police by Bonefesi Lukolele, a resident of the area. Detectives from the Homicide Department and Scene of Crime Officers (SOCO) responded to the scene to conduct examinations.
Police said they observed fresh burn marks on the victim’s left hand, which they believe was the point of electrical contact.
Investigators also discovered that the house was connected to electricity illegally, a factor suspected to have contributed to the fatal accident.
As part of the ongoing investigations, police arrested the landlord, Pastor Wabutwa Hassan, to assist in establishing responsibility for the illegal electricity installation and the circumstances surrounding the student’s death.
Police have since cautioned landlords and tenants against unsafe electrical practices, urging them to ensure all electrical installations are done by qualified technicians and subjected to regular safety inspections.
Taitika said adherence to electrical safety standards is critical in preventing avoidable tragedies that continue to claim lives across communities.
