Police Probe Circumstances Surrounding Death of 16-Year-Old S3 Student

Elgon Region Police spokesperson SP Rogers Taitika confirmed the incident and said investigations are ongoing to determine the circumstances surrounding the death.

Police in Mbale City have launched investigations into the death of a 16-year-old student of Mbale High School who was found dead at her home on Tuesday.

The deceased has been identified as Nelima Catherine, also known as Nisha, a Senior Three student and resident of Bukisukye Lower Cell, Bumutoto Ward in Industrial Division, Mbale City.

According to preliminary police reports, the incident is suspected to have occurred on June 9, 2026, at an unknown time during the day while the teenager was at home with her siblings.

It is alleged that her mother, Jennifer Kanyunyuzi, 39, a businesswoman, left home in the morning for work, leaving Catherine and other children at the residence. When she returned at about 5:00pm, she reportedly found the other children at neighbours’ homes.

Upon checking her bedroom, Kanyunyuzi allegedly discovered her daughter unresponsive and hanging from a piece of mosquito net.

The matter was reported to Mbale Central Police Station, prompting officers from the Homicide Unit and Scene of Crime Department to visit the scene and document evidence.

The body was later conveyed to Mbale City Mortuary for a post-mortem examination to establish the exact cause of death.

Elgon Region Police spokesperson SP Rogers Taitika confirmed the incident and said investigations are ongoing to determine the circumstances surrounding the death.

“We are investigating the matter to establish the exact circumstances that led to the death. The post-mortem examination will help determine the cause of death,” Taitika said.

He urged parents, guardians and schools to remain vigilant regarding the mental health and well-being of children and encouraged anyone with information that may assist investigators to report to Mbale Central Police Station.

Police said no arrests had been made by press time as inquiries continue.
