Political activist and photojournalist Andrew Natumanya, popularly known as Ninye Tabz, has been released on police bond following his detention over allegations of unauthorized disclosure of information.

According to a police release on bond form, Natumanya was granted bond by the Criminal Investigations Directorate and ordered to report back to the Central Police Station (CPS) Kampala on June 29, 2026, at 10:00 a.m. as investigations continue.

Natumanya, a prominent anti-corruption activist known for his outspoken political commentary and advocacy, was reportedly taken away last week by armed operatives traveling in a Toyota Hiace minibus, locally referred to as a “drone” — a term widely used in Uganda to describe unmarked security vehicles associated with controversial arrests.

His detention sparked concern among supporters, fellow activists and members of the media fraternity, who have previously raised alarm over the use of such operations against government critics and opposition figures.

On Sunday afternoon, Natumanya was dropped at Central Police Station in Kampala, where he underwent processing before being released on police bond.

The release form indicates that he is facing charges related to the alleged unauthorized disclosure of information, although authorities have not publicly disclosed further details about the specific allegations.

As part of the bond conditions, Natumanya and his sureties committed to ensuring his appearance before investigators whenever required. Failure to comply could result in financial penalties in accordance with Ugandan law.

Ninye Tabz has built a strong public profile through his work as a photojournalist and anti-corruption campaigner, frequently using social media platforms to criticize corruption, advocate for accountability and comment on national political affairs.

His latest arrest is expected to renew debate over civic freedoms, freedom of expression and the treatment of government critics in Uganda.

Police have not yet issued a comprehensive public statement regarding the circumstances surrounding his detention or the progress of the ongoing investigations.
