Kamurasi is the son of George Desmond “Jimmy” Mugenyi, the younger brother of the late King Patrick David Mathew Olimi Kaboyo II.
The Royal Succession Committee of the Toro Kingdom has selected George Desmond Kamurasi, 36, as the next king of Toro, according to journalist Andrew Mwenda.
Kamurasi is set to succeed his late cousin, His Majesty Oyo Nyimba Kabamba Iguru Rukidi IV, who died on August 26, 2026, in Texas, United States.
The 21-member Royal Succession Committee, chaired by Omusuuga Charles Akiiki Kamurasi, was selected by the Royal Clan of Toro (Ababiito) on August 28.
According to Mwenda, the committee met on September 4 at Fort Motel in Fort Portal City from 11am to 3pm, with 18 of its 21 members in attendance. Fifteen members voted in favour of George Kamurasi.
Kamurasi is the son of George Desmond “Jimmy” Mugenyi, the younger brother of the late King Patrick David Mathew Olimi Kaboyo II.
Mwenda said Kamurasi was second in line to succeed his brother Olimi Kaboyo II, according to the will of their late father, the late King George Rukidi III.
Following the committee’s decision, Mwenda said he held discussions with the Chief of Defence Forces of the Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF), Gen Muhoozi Kainerugaba, who is also chairman of the Patriotic League of Uganda (PLU), as well as the Chief of Land Forces, Gen Kayanja Muhanga.
According to Mwenda, Gen Kainerugaba endorsed the committee’s choice, saying it was consistent with Toro’s customs, precedents and laws governing succession.
Mwenda further said Gen Kainerugaba informed him that President Yoweri Museveni supports the decision of the Royal Succession Committee.
He said the President had sent a team led by a senior Cabinet minister to Fort Portal, where consultations were held with key stakeholders.
“After extensive consultations with all the key stakeholders, the committee was convinced that there is a wide consensus around the succession of Kamurasi,” Mwenda said.
However, the formal public announcement of the new king is yet to be made.
Mwenda said he had spoken to Omusuuga Charles Akiiki Kamurasi, who explained that, according to Toro custom, the public announcement is made after the burial of the deceased king.
Mwenda said he decided to disclose the committee’s decision ahead of the formal announcement to prevent speculation and confusion on social media.
The selection of Kamurasi now sets the stage for the next phase of Toro’s traditional succession process following the death of King Oyo, who had reigned over the kingdom since 1995.
