The naming of Prince Edward Kijanangoma is therefore expected to usher in a new era for the Tooro Kingdom as the Babiito royal family prepares for the formal installation of the next Omukama.

Prince Edward Rukidi Kijanangoma has been officially named the next Omukama of Tooro Kingdom, following the death of Omukama Oyo Nyimba Kabamba Iguru Rukidi IV in August 2026.

Kijanangoma’s selection was announced by the Babiito Clan succession committee, which oversees the traditional process of identifying the heir to the Tooro throne.

The announcement sets in motion the process of transferring the Tooro crown to a new generation of the Babiito royal family, following the death of Oyo, who had been on the throne since 1995.

Prince Edward Kijanangoma is a member of the Babiito royal family and traces his lineage to the Tooro monarchy through the royal house of former Omukama Sir George Edward Kamurasi Rukidi.

His selection comes amid renewed attention on the succession arrangements within the Tooro royal family following Oyo’s death.

The Tooro throne has historically been inherited through the Babiito clan, with the succession process involving senior members of the royal family and clan leadership.

Kijanangoma is also from the wider royal family associated with the late Prince Paul Kijanangoma. The Kijanangoma family has previously featured prominently in discussions surrounding the Tooro monarchy.

The next stage is expected to involve preparations for the traditional ceremonies through which Kijanangoma will formally assume the Tooro crown.

His successor inherits a kingdom with a deep cultural and historical heritage, as well as a significant role in preserving the identity and traditions of the people of Tooro.

The naming of Prince Edward Kijanangoma is therefore expected to usher in a new era for the Tooro Kingdom as the Babiito royal family prepares for the formal installation of the next Omukama.

The deceased King of Tooro, Oyo Nyimba Kabambayiguru will be laid to rest on Saturday.
