Elgon Region police spokesperson Rogers Taitika confirmed the incident and said investigators were awaiting a post-mortem report to establish the cause of death.
Police in Mbale City are investigating circumstances surrounding the death of a first-year medical student at Islamic University in Uganda (IUIU), whose body was found in a decomposing state in his rented room in Kiduda Cell, Namatala Ward, Industrial Division.
The deceased has been identified as Watyakala Dan, 24, a resident of Kiduda Cell, where he was renting.
According to police, a relative received information that Watyakala had been found dead in his room and rushed to the residence to establish what had happened.
Upon arrival, the relative reportedly found the door to the room open and Watyakala’s body lying on the bed. The body was already decomposing and had started producing a strong smell.

The relative reportedly asked neighbours whether they knew what had happened to the student, but they said they had no information about his death.
He subsequently went to the police and reported the matter, prompting officers to visit the scene and begin investigations.
Police said there were allegations that the student could have been poisoned, but the exact cause of his death had not yet been established.
