Bishop’s Senior School Mukono has entered a new era of leadership following the retirement of its Headteacher, Robert Kyakulaga, whose stewardship of the institution spanned nearly 11 years.

A thanksgiving and farewell service held on Friday evening marked the transition. The event was led by the Bishop of Mukono Diocese, Rt. Rev. Enos Kitto Kagodo, and brought together church leaders, educators, parents, students, and other stakeholders to celebrate Kyakulaga’s service and welcome his successor.

In his address, Bishop Kagodo urged Christians and education stakeholders to prioritize God in every aspect of their lives, emphasizing that true success comes from placing Him above all.

“Put God first in your lives and let Him take precedence over everything—in your homes, at work, and in all other positions. That is how you will attain success,” he said.

The Bishop praised Kyakulaga’s leadership, describing him as a committed administrator whose achievements were strengthened by the support of his family. He noted that the outgoing Headteacher leaves office with distinction, having preserved the reputation and standards of Bishop’s Senior School Mukono, an institution renowned for producing influential leaders, including three Bishops.

Bishop Kagodo also commended the teaching and non-teaching staff, together with the school Board, for their dedication and hard work in sustaining the school’s success over the years.

Addressing Kyakulaga directly, the bishop encouraged him to view retirement not as the end of his service, but as the beginning of new opportunities within the Church and the education sector.

“God’s eye has been upon you throughout your journey,” the Bishop remarked, encouraging him to embrace the next phase of service with confidence.

During the ceremony, Bishop Kagodo announced the appointment of John Ssenkuuma Musoke, formerly Headteacher of St. Peter’s Kibuzi Secondary School in Kayunga, as the new Headteacher of Bishop Senior School Mukono.

He advised Musoke to remain prayerful, deepen his relationship with God, and work closely with the school Board in order to build on the institution’s achievements and sustain its progress.

Drawing from Exodus 18:1–16 under the theme “Know Your Journey,” Bishop Kagodo reflected on Kyakulaga’s career, noting that, like Jethro, he now has a rich testimony to share from his years of service.

Also speaking at the event, Bishop Emeritus James William Ssebaggala, Chancellor of Avance International University, applauded Kyakulaga and the school’s staff for their commitment to academic excellence and student discipline.

He praised the Board and the Parents-Teachers Association (PTA) for maintaining the institution’s standards and urged them to continue strengthening its mission and objectives.

“They must continue to uphold and strengthen the mission, objectives, and goals of this school,” he said.

Bishop Ssebaggala further encouraged all stakeholders who had worked closely with Kyakulaga to extend the same cooperation and support to Musoke, noting that his new role carries significant expectations.

In a gesture of support for the school community, he also announced 85 scholarships for Bishop’s Senior School Mukono students wishing to pursue further studies at Avance International University.

Reflecting on his professional journey, Kyakulaga recounted that he began his teaching career at Mityana Secondary School in 1991. He later joined Bishop Senior School Mukono on February 15, 1998, with the responsibility of improving science performance.

Over the years, he rose through the ranks, serving as Director of Studies and Deputy Headteacher before eventually being appointed Headteacher.

Looking back on his tenure, Kyakulaga highlighted several milestones achieved under his leadership. These included building a highly motivated workforce, nurturing a disciplined and academically focused student population, increasing the school’s annual revenue fourfold, and overseeing major infrastructural and technological developments.

He expressed appreciation to the Diocese of Mukono for entrusting him with leadership and for providing continuous moral, spiritual, and administrative support throughout his service.

“On March 6, 2015, the leadership of this school was handed over to me amidst anxiety and fear of the unknown. I am excited that today, June 5, 2026, I have handed over the leadership of this mighty school with happiness and confidence that all is well and will remain well,” he said.

In his acceptance remarks, Musoke thanked the Bishop for the confidence placed in him and expressed optimism about the future of the institution.

“I come with valuable networks and partnerships that will enable us to elevate this institution to greater heights,” he said.

He pledged to embrace a collaborative leadership style and called on members of staff to remain united and committed to the school’s shared vision.

“Staff, you are the driving force of this institution. I pledge to work diligently alongside you so that we can achieve our shared goals. I therefore urge you to remain united as one team and to support one another,” he said.

The ceremony attracted a wide range of guests, including the Bishop’s wife, Maama Catherine Kitto; the Provost, The Very Rev. Canon Godfrey Ssengendo; the Diocesan Secretary, Rev. John Musoke; Seeta Archdeacon, Rev. Canon Edward Balamaze Kironde; clergy, lay readers, headteachers from other schools, Board members, parents, and students.
