Timothy Magambo, the 18-year-old son of Uganda’s Criminal Investigations Department (CID) Director Maj. Tom Magambo, has died after a drowning incident in waters off Long Island, New York.
According to police reports released on Sunday, May 17, Timothy Magambo had been swimming with friends near Shelter Island, located at the eastern tip of Long Island, on Saturday, May 16, when the tragedy occurred.
Authorities said Magambo was part of a group of seven young people who attempted to swim from Wades Beach to Shell Beach across a channel. During the swim, he reportedly became separated from the group.

Investigators later established that Magambo had turned back toward Wades Beach while the rest of the group continued ahead. When his friends realized he was missing, they alerted authorities and began searching for him.

Timothy Magambo had recently completed his freshman year at the University at Albany (SUNY Albany), where he was pursuing business studies. He was also remembered as a talented athlete who played lacrosse during his time at Pelham Memorial High School, from which he graduated in 2025.
The tragic incident has drawn sympathy from friends, schoolmates, and members of the Ugandan community both at home and abroad as the Magambo family mourns the loss of their son.
