The closure followed heated discussions and celebratory messages from some residents who reacted to news of Karangwa’s death on Monday morning. Some members reportedly expressed disbelief that a man they described as influential and feared could also die.

Administrators of a community WhatsApp group in Kayunga District have temporarily closed the platform following an influx of messages from members celebrating the death of the district National Resistance Movement (NRM) chairperson and Special Presidential Advisor, Moses Karisa Karangwa.

One of the group administrators, identified only as “Clear Touch Consult,” restricted participation rights to fellow administrators, leaving ordinary members only able to view messages posted by admins.

In a message shared on the platform before its closure, the administrator said the decision was taken out of respect for Karangwa’s grieving family members, some of whom are also members of the group.

“As an admin on this platform, I am closing it for some days until Friday, Inshallah. Our brothers related to Mr. Karangwa are going through pain and discussions going on this platform are causing a little more pain. It’s not the purpose of this platform to cause pain to others. Ekimala kimala bakwano,” the message read.

The closure followed heated discussions and celebratory messages from some residents who reacted to news of Karangwa’s death on Monday morning. Some members reportedly expressed disbelief that a man they described as influential and feared could also die.

Karangwa had for years faced accusations from sections of residents of involvement in land grabbing and allegedly using his position in government to intimidate and evict vulnerable people from their land. However, no court conviction had been publicly reported against him over the allegations.

According to Traffic Police spokesperson Michael Kananura, Karangwa died following a road crash at Suuka Village along the Kayunga–Jinja Road on the night of May 17, 2026, at around 9:00 pm.

Kananura said the accident involved a Toyota Hilux registration number UG 0101 151 and an unidentified motorcycle.

Preliminary police investigations indicate that the Toyota Hilux was travelling from Kayunga towards Jinja when it collided with a motorcycle that was reportedly joining the main road near Lake Oil Petrol Station in Suuka.

“As a result of the collision, the driver reportedly lost control of the vehicle, which overturned several times. Three passengers sustained injuries in the crash, including Mr. Kalangwa Kalisa Moses, who suffered critical injuries,” Kananura said.

The injured victims were first rushed to Kayunga Regional Referral Hospital before Karangwa was referred to Nakasero Hospital, where he was later pronounced dead.

Police investigations into the crash are ongoing.
