His renewed plea for bail comes amid growing concerns over his health as the court proceedings continue.

Erias Lukwago, the former Kampala Lord Mayor and lawyer for retired opposition politician Dr. Kizza Besigye has renewed his appeal for bail, asking the court to release him so he can seek specialized medical treatment.

Lukwago, who also serves as the President of the People’s Front for Freedom (PFF), told the court during a virtual hearing conducted via Zoom that his health has significantly deteriorated and that he requires urgent medical attention. He warned that failure to receive specialized treatment could put his life at risk.

Lukwago is facing a charge of misprision of treason. His initial bail application on medical grounds was denied after the trial magistrate ruled that his release could interfere with ongoing investigations, citing his influence, as well as the seriousness of the charges against him.

Instead of granting bail, the court directed authorities at Luzira Prison to facilitate his treatment at Mulago National Referral Hospital. The magistrate also ordered prison officials to allow Lukwago’s wife and one lawyer of his choice access to him whenever necessary.

Following the court’s directive, Lukwago was taken to Mulago Hospital, where he received treatment for several days before being discharged and returned to Luzira Prison.
