A wild fire has gutted Lutoboka, a landing site that acts as the face of Kalangala Town Council in Kalangala District.
The fire, presumed to have been set by a woman said to have been smoking fish within the landing site left more than 30 houses, with about 100 people left homeless.
The incident happened on Tuesday afternoon as people within the landing site went about with their daily business.
Eye witnesses indicated that the burning of part of Lutoboka landing site has left hundreds wondering on their next course of action after all properties including their personal utilities were burnt down.
“What saved the remaining communities has been the breaking of other wooden structures at the landing site to ensure fire doesn’t spread. We must ask our planning team to allow us construct permanent houses which may not easily be spoilt by such fire,” says Sunday Kigozi, the area leader.
Police Marines, the Scene of Crime Officer, District CID, Community Liaison Officer, District Chairperson and a representative of the Office of the President Visited the scene.
“We now must work towards the provision of firefighting equipment because if we had any, we would be in position to save the properties of our people,” said Henry Lubulwa, the Assistant RDC for Kalangala.
The Uganda Red Cross Society, led by the Branch Manager for Kalangala, Sylvester Ssemugenyi are currently joining hands with the district administration to find temporary interventions for all those that are in dire need but had all their property burnt down in the fires on Tuesday afternoon.
Kalangala Mayor Vicky Victoria Bratton says, Kalangala town council needs a physical plan that would help in the supporting of safety and security of the people in the area to avoid being involved in such harm.
