Former Works and Transport Minister Monica Azuba Ntege has passed away, according to a source familiar with the matter who spoke late Tuesday. Her death marks the loss of a former cabinet member who played a role in overseeing key national infrastructure projects under President Yoweri Museveni.

Azuba Ntege served in Cabinet for slightly over three years following her appointment in 2016. She took over from John Byabagambi, who was reassigned to the Ministry for Karamoja Affairs.

During her tenure, she supervised major road and transport infrastructure projects across the country. Her time in office ended in 2019, when she was replaced by current Works and Transport Minister Edward Katumba Wamala.

In 2018, Azuba Ntege drew public attention when she announced investigations into senior ministry officials accused of sharing part of a $2 million (about sh7 billion) performance bond paid by Société Générale de Surveillance (SGS) Uganda Limited, a firm contracted to conduct mandatory motor vehicle inspections.

Her passing comes just over a year after the death of her husband, Mark Kawesa Ntege, who died on January 12, 2025. The couple, who wed on February 27, 1998, are survived by eight children.

As of Tuesday night, no official communication had been made regarding the cause of death or funeral arrangements.
