Two mechanics have been killed and three other people injured after a gas cylinder exploded at a garage in Ireda Central Park Cell, Lira City.
The explosion occurred at about 6:00pm on October 10, 2026, in a busy market area where several members of the public were present.
The deceased have been identified as Okabo James and Daniel, whose other particulars had not been established by the time of publication.
According to preliminary police findings, the two mechanics were repairing a motorcycle at their garage using a gas cylinder when it suddenly exploded, killing them instantly and injuring three people nearby.
North Kyoga Regional Police spokesperson SP Patrick Okema said the injured persons were evacuated to Lira Regional Referral Hospital for treatment, while the bodies of the deceased were taken to the same facility for postmortem examinations.

Okema said police had opened a case file of death by explosion and launched investigations to establish the exact cause of the incident, identify the injured persons, verify the particulars of the deceased and obtain postmortem results.
Police extended condolences to the families of the deceased and wished the injured a quick recovery.
The public was also urged to exercise extreme caution when handling gas cylinders and other pressurised equipment, particularly during repair work, and to ensure that such tasks are carried out by competent personnel under appropriate safety conditions.
