The old saying of history repeating itself came true when this year, Kabale University School of Medicine for the second year running emerged winner of the African inter-medical school quiz competition, bringing 39 other participating universities to their knees.
Last year, Kabale beat 53 competing universities in the prestigious quiz organized by the Federation of African Medical Students Association (FAMSA). This year, a total of 42 medical schools from 40 universities participated in the quiz which raged throughout the months of November and December.
FAMSA, the quiz organizer, is a project-oriented organisation recognised by the World Health Organization (WHO) and the African Union (AU), and the quiz is intended to annually excite the minds of medical students in Africa, in addition to helping them maintain a healthy competitive mind set.
Kabale University Medical Students Association crowned the quiz with a Gold, Tanzania Medical Students Association SFUCHAS – Silver and
Olabisi University Medical Students Association – Bronze.
In an interview, the Dean of Kabale University School of Medicine, Prof. James Tumwine emphasized the value of character and professional knowledge for the university medical students and medical practitioners badly needed in the current medical environment.
Prof. Tumwine disclosed that the quiz is in line with the constitutional roles of the Standing Committee on Medical Education and Research (SCOMER), including improvement of medical education standards in Africa, encouragement of training of medical students in research principles and procedures, stimulation of original thinking among medical students and co-ordination of research and appraisal of its practical application.
The leader of the four-man leading team was Okwir Joshua Kizito, a fifth year MBChB student, and it was composed of Isaac Matovu in the 4th year, Lawrence Luleba in the third year, and Bongomat Daniel in the fifth year.
Following the history-making feat, Isaac Matovu, one of the participants, came up with the suggestion that the fruits of the victory be brought closer to local levels through organisation of training of trainers’ sessions for a multiplier effect.
The team leader, Joshua Okwir Kizito told Kyaggwe TV that each of the competing universities fielded four participants who were divided into four categories of ten universities. From each group, four universities were chosen to form the semifinals, and eight to make the finals.
