Mulago National Referral Hospital has announced a major expansion of its specialized medical services, marking a significant step forward in Uganda’s efforts to strengthen advanced healthcare delivery and reduce dependence on treatment abroad.

The hospital says it is now offering a wider range of highly specialized surgical procedures, advanced diagnostics, and cutting-edge treatment technologies aimed at improving access to world-class healthcare for Ugandans.

Among the key developments is the expansion of advanced surgical care, with the hospital now performing complex procedures such as organ transplants, neurosurgery, open-heart and cardiothoracic surgery, as well as total hip and knee replacements. Minimally invasive “pinhole” surgery services have also been fully rolled out.

In medicine and pediatrics, the referral facility has introduced advanced neurology services, including brain mapping and Deep Brain Stimulation technology, alongside expanded pulmonology care through Endobronchial Ultrasound-Guided Transbronchial Needle Aspiration (EBUS-TBNA). The hospital has also strengthened specialized neonatology services to provide intensive care for premature and critically ill newborns.

Mulago has further invested in next-generation diagnostic services aimed at improving the accuracy and speed of treatment. These include molecular diagnostic pathology, interventional radiology, and advanced biochemical testing such as genotyping and cytogenetics.

Dr. Rosemary Kusaba Byanyima, the Executive Director of Mulago National Referral Hospital says the expansion is part of a broader strategy to position Uganda as a regional leader in specialized healthcare by combining highly trained medical specialists with advanced treatment protocols and modern medical technology.

Byanyima says the development is expected to ease pressure on patients who previously sought complex medical care outside the country, while also improving training opportunities for local healthcare professionals and medical researchers.
