The day one of the Mukono Zonal Agricultural Research and Development Institute (MUZARDI) Seed of Gold Farm Clinic on Saturday August 23, 2025 had very successful results after attracting hundreds of farmers from Mukono and the neighbouring districts in Buganda region.

Held at MUZARDI headquarters located at Ntaawo in Mukono Central Division, Mukono Municipality, the two-day Seeds of Gold Farm Clinic has been organized in conjunction with the Nation Media Group.

It targeted major production sectors including fisheries, local chicken production, coffee, beans, banana, piggery, vegetables and maize. It is intended to train farmers in smart farming for bumper harvest, best farming techniques on limited land, improving local animal breeds to meet modern standards, and pig rearing as a highly profitable venture. It’s to be concluded on Sunday August 24, 2024.

The opening day was graced by the NARO Deputy Director General Agricultural Technology Promotion, Dr. Sadik Kassim who equipped farmers with ten tips on how to manage and have profitable agriculture.

They include, soil management, water management, good crop or animal husbandry, timeliness, diversification among others.

The Director of Research at MUZARDI, Dr. Henry Mulindwa said that their main objective is to do adoptive research.

Dr. Mulindwa said they realized that there is a gap between research outcomes and extension and in order to address that, NARO partnered with the National Media Group to carry out the Seeds of Gold farm clinics in different regions where farmers meet researchers, disseminate the key findings and additional sensitization on better farm and agricultural practices. We had one of the farm clinics in Moroto, Arua and now Mukono, catering for a big part of Buganda regions.

“This the opportunity where scientists sensitize the farmers on the best agronomic practices which help them increase their yields,” he said.

Jane Kugonza, the NARO Senior Outreach Officer said that as NARO, their main role is to innovate for sustainable agriculture transformation and that when the products of their innovation, inventions and research come out, they do not want them to attract dust in shelves but to be disseminated and get known by the masses.

“If that is done, it helps to increase production and productivity at the farms of different farmers along the different value chains they are dealing in and other enterprises,” she said.

Among the participants for the first day, is Kyolaba Mary Gorret, a S5 student at St. Joseph’s S.S Naggalama in Mukono district, offering Biology, Chemistry and Agriculture who said she was so eager to learn each and every bit of the information given out by the experts.

“It’s unfortunate that the organisers did not alert schools for students more so those who offer sciences to attend this very informative and educational farm clinic. I pray that for the next clinic, let schools be informed because I have benefited more as a student,” Kyolaba said.

The clinic was organized by various players including the Bank of Uganda, Pride Bank, media organizations, farm input distributors and other stakeholders. Exhibitions on mechanized best practice post-harvest handling for maize, cassava and other crops were held by various exhibitors.
