Police said both drivers were immediately arrested and charged with the relevant traffic offences before being detained at Kampala Central Police Station (CPS), where they remain pending their appearance in court.

Two school bus drivers have been arrested and charged after they were found dangerously overloading buses transporting pupils of St. Kizito Primary School during a traffic operation in Kampala.

According to Traffic Police spokesperson Michael Kananura, the drivers were intercepted on Friday at the Golf Course area during a routine traffic enforcement operation.

The suspects were identified as Kimbugwe Alia, the driver of bus registration number UA 092AS, who was found carrying 110 pupils, and Mutesasira Abubakari, the driver of bus registration number UAN 619X, who was transporting 97 pupils.

Police said both drivers were immediately arrested and charged with the relevant traffic offences before being detained at Kampala Central Police Station (CPS), where they remain pending their appearance in court.

Kananura said police are working closely with the management of St. Kizito Primary School to ensure the pupils are safely transported to their intended destination using appropriate and safe means of transport.

The arrests come amid heightened enforcement of road safety regulations following recent fatal crashes involving school children. Police have intensified inspections of school buses to ensure compliance with traffic laws and passenger safety requirements.

Kananura further revealed that the Uganda Police Force, together with other key stakeholders, is finalising comprehensive guidelines aimed at improving the safety of school transportation and reducing the growing number of road crashes involving school children.

He said the new guidelines will be communicated to the public once the ongoing consultative process is completed.
