A police officer attached to the Counter Terrorism Directorate has been charged with attempted murder following the shooting of a woman near the residence of the Speaker of Parliament, Annet Anita Among in Kampala last week.

Corporal Humphrey Muhanguzi, 38, appeared before the Wandegeya court on Friday and was formally charged with attempted murder contrary to Section 187 of the Penal Code Act. Muhanguzi denied the charge and pleaded not guilty before being remanded until May 18, when court is expected to rule on his bail application.

According to the charge sheet under CRB 198/2026 filed by Wandegeya Police, Muhanguzi is accused of attempting to cause the death of Annet Kemirembe on April 30, 2026, at Kafu Road in Nakasero, Kampala District.

Muhanguzi, a Munyankole by tribe and resident of Naguru Police Barracks in Nakawa Division, is attached to the police Counter Terrorism unit.

Kemirembe, who was critically injured in the shooting, remains hospitalised. A source close to her family, who requested anonymity because they are not authorised to speak publicly about the matter, said doctors on Friday removed another bullet from her left hand, suggesting she may have been shot more than once.

The source added that several bones in her right hand were shattered during the attack and that doctors fear the injuries could leave her with permanent disabilities.

The shooting attracted widespread public attention after reports emerged that it occurred near the Speaker’s residence in Nakasero, one of Kampala’s high-security areas.

Investigations into the shooting are ongoing.
