Police have urged members of the public who may have lost their mobile phones to cooperate with investigators during the verification process once ownership identification begins.
Kampala Metropolitan Police have recovered more than 300 suspected stolen mobile phones and arrested 30 suspects during an intelligence-led operation at Cooper Complex in Kampala’s Central Business District.
The operation was conducted on Tuesday following intelligence reports that the building had become a key centre for the theft and sale of suspected stolen mobile phones.
According to Kampala Metropolitan Police Deputy Public Relations Officer, ASP Luke Owoyesigyire, the recovered mobile phones have been secured as investigations continue to establish their rightful owners.
The 30 suspects are currently in police custody and are being interrogated to aid ongoing investigations. Police said statements will be recorded from the suspects and other relevant witnesses before the suspects are formally charged and prosecuted where sufficient evidence is available.
Owoyesigyire said the operation is part of the Uganda Police Force’s broader campaign to curb the increasing cases of mobile phone theft and dismantle networks involved in the illegal trade of suspected stolen property.
Police have urged members of the public who may have lost their mobile phones to cooperate with investigators during the verification process once ownership identification begins.
Authorities said more details about the operation and the investigations will be released as inquiries progress.
