The Masaka Chief Magistrate’s Court has convicted and sentenced Mwesigye Amos, accused of illegally dealing in land in Gomba District, after finding him guilty of obtaining sh300m by false pretences.
Court has ordered Mwesigye to pay sh300m in compensation to the complainant, Steven Kagyenyi, from whom he obtained the money.
Mwesigye was arrested and charged in 2023 by the State House Anti-Corruption Unit, working jointly with the Criminal Investigations Directorate (CID) and the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (ODPP), following a complaint that he had fraudulently obtained the money from Kagyenyi.

Prosecution told court that in 2020, Mwesigye, together with some family members of the late Nasanairi Kinalwa, allegedly colluded to falsely claim ownership of 120 acres of titled land in Gomba.
According to the prosecution, the accused persons were not the rightful owners of the land but nevertheless presented themselves as owners and proceeded to transact on it.
Mwesigye allegedly went ahead to sell portions of the disputed land to other individuals, in an attempt to undermine the interests of the registered owner.
Following the prosecution, the Masaka Chief Magistrate’s Court found Mwesigye guilty and ordered him to compensate Kagyenyi with Shs300 million, bringing the long-running land fraud case to a close.
