The Catholic Church in Mozambique is reeling from shock and grief following the fatal shooting of Bishop Osório Citora Afonso of Quelimane, who was found dead at his residence in the early hours of June 6.

According to the international Catholic charity Aid to the Church in Need (ACN), the bishop’s body was discovered in a corridor of the episcopal residence. The circumstances surrounding his death remain unclear, and authorities have yet to identify those responsible for the attack.

Archbishop Inácio Saúre of Nampula, president of the Mozambique Episcopal Conference, said the Church received the news with profound sorrow. In a statement shared with ACN, he described Bishop Afonso as having been found “lifeless and in strange circumstances that have yet to be clarified,” and called on the faithful to remain united in prayer, faith, and solidarity during this difficult period.

Reports indicate that Bishop Afonso, a member of the Consolata Missionaries, was shot in the chest near the heart. His death has stunned the Catholic community across Mozambique and beyond, where he was widely respected for his pastoral leadership and commitment to peace.

Mozambique’s President Daniel Chapo expressed his condolences, describing the bishop’s death as an irreparable loss to both the nation and the Christian community. He praised Bishop Afonso for his humility, dedication to ministry, and tireless efforts to promote reconciliation and harmony in society.

The tragedy also drew a response from Pope Leo XIV, who learned of the incident during the first day of his apostolic visit to Spain. In a statement released by the Holy See Press Office, the Pope said he was saddened by the violent act and joined the people of Mozambique in prayer, asking God to comfort those who mourn and to protect all people from violence.

At the time of his death, the 54-year-old bishop was serving not only as Bishop of Quelimane but also as apostolic administrator of the Archdiocese of Beira, following the resignation of Archbishop Cláudio Zunna in April due to health concerns.

The killing comes at a time when the Church in Mozambique is already facing significant challenges. ACN noted that the country continues to grapple with extremist violence in the northern province of Cabo Delgado, where attacks by militants linked to the Islamic State have targeted both Christian and Muslim communities since 2017.

Just weeks before Bishop Afonso’s death, extremists attacked the historic St. Louis de Montfort Church in Meza, Cabo Delgado Province. The assault added to a growing list of attacks on churches and Christian communities in the region.

The U.S. Commission on International Religious Freedom has reported that Islamic State-Mozambique has intensified attacks in Christian-majority areas of Cabo Delgado, including the burning of churches and killings of Christians. The commission warned that repeated assaults on Catholic parishes have displaced entire communities and damaged religious infrastructure across the province.

Mozambique has also experienced a wave of deadly violence involving opposition politicians in recent weeks. While government officials have characterized the incidents as isolated cases, opposition groups and civil society organizations have raised concerns about a possible pattern of politically motivated killings.

As investigations into Bishop Afonso’s death continue, Catholics across Mozambique and around the world are mourning the loss of a church leader remembered for his faith, humility, and dedication to serving others. His death leaves a deep void in a nation striving for peace amid ongoing security and political challenges.
