Three suspects accused of kidnapping two children in Njeru, Buikwe District, have led police to rented houses they allegedly used as hideouts for their victims.

The suspects, identified as Richard Odongo, Derick Nkurunziza and Dan Kasajja, were taken to Bujowaali village in Naminya Parish, Wakisi Division, where they reportedly demonstrated how they operated and transported victims to the hideouts.

The suspects, who had reportedly been held at a security facility in Kampala, were transferred to Njeru Police Station last Friday as investigations into a series of alleged kidnap incidents continued.

Police took them to four locations where they allegedly operated, including two rented rooms in Bujowaali and Malindi.

The suspects, who were handcuffed and had chains around their legs, reportedly showed security operatives how they moved their victims from their homes to the rented houses.

Security operatives cordoned off the house where the suspects were renting and allegedly used it as a hideout.

Police later cordoned off one of the buildings in Bujowaali allegedly used as a hideout as investigations continued.

Police said the suspects are linked to the alleged kidnapping of three children and a woman from three different families this year.

Earlier this month, the suspects allegedly abducted two children from the home of accountant and auditor Patrick Mugabane in Bujowaali.

They reportedly demanded sh45m for the children’s release and, after the ransom was paid, directed the family to where they had left the children.

However, security operatives reportedly arrested the suspects before the children reached their parents and subsequently rescued them.

The suspects are also accused of abducting Molletie Komugisha, 50, the wife of Talemwa Bosses, proprietor of St Abel and St Mary’s High School in Njeru, on May 28.

The kidnappers allegedly demanded sh100m for her release before later demanding an additional sh17m to transport her back to an area near her home.

Komugisha said the kidnappers jumped over the wall of her home at about 7:00pm while armed with a gun before tying up people in the house and taking her away.

“They tied my hands behind my back, covered my eyes and warned that they would shoot me if I raised an alarm. They did not allow me to see their faces,” she said.

Ssezibwa Regional Police spokesperson Helen Butoto confirmed that the suspects were in custody and said they had demonstrated to police how they allegedly carried out their operations.

Butoto said the suspects were arrested with a gun and that investigations were still ongoing.

Residents have called for increased police presence in Bujowaali, Malindi and surrounding areas amid concerns over rising cases of robbery, violence and kidnapping.
