Five people have died following a fatal road crash that occurred in the early hours of Tuesday along the Gulu–Kampala Highway in Kiryandongo District.
According to the Uganda Police Force Traffic Directorate, the accident happened at around 2:00am on March 10, 2026, at California Village in Bweyale Town Council.
Traffic police spokesperson Michael Kananura said the crash involved three vehicles: motor vehicle UA 657CM, a bus belonging to Nile Coach; UBQ 350T, a King Long bus; and UBF 576B, a Sino truck.
Preliminary investigations indicate that a Mega Bus travelling from Gulu to Kampala rammed into a stationary Sino truck at the scene.
Upon impact, the driver reportedly lost control of the bus and subsequently collided with a Nile Coach bus. The force of the collision caused the Nile Coach bus to lose control and overturn.
Police said three passengers aboard the Mega Bus died instantly at the scene.
Another 11 passengers from the same bus sustained injuries and were rushed to Kiryandongo Hospital for treatment. However, two of the injured victims later died at the hospital, bringing the total number of fatalities to five.
Police said investigations into the exact circumstances surrounding the crash are still ongoing.
Authorities have urged motorists to observe road safety measures, especially when travelling at night.
Drivers are reminded to place triangular warning signs when vehicles break down on the road to alert other motorists and to remove broken-down vehicles from the roadway as quickly as possible.
Motorists have also been advised to drive at controlled speeds and remain vigilant for obstacles on the road, particularly during night travel.
