The National Resistance Movement (NRM) Central Executive Committee (CEC), sitting at State House in Entebbe, has endorsed Jacob Oboth Oboth and Thomas Tayebwa as the ruling party’s official candidates for Speaker and Deputy Speaker of Parliament respectively.

The resolutions were announced on Sunday by NRM Secretary General Richard Todwong after the party’s top decision-making organ concluded its meeting.

According to Todwong, CEC recommended Oboth Oboth to the NRM parliamentary caucus for the Speaker position based on his strong legal background, experience, and understanding of parliamentary procedures.

“He has demonstrated exceptional legal acumen and command of parliamentary law. His legal expertise places him in a strong position to interpret parliamentary rules and ensure proceedings are conducted within the law,” Todwong said.

The ruling party also cited Oboth Oboth’s loyalty to the NRM, commitment to party programmes, and ability to unite members as some of the factors that influenced the endorsement.

CEC further described him as a calm and less controversial figure capable of steering parliamentary business effectively.

At the same meeting, the NRM leadership endorsed Thomas Tayebwa for the position of Deputy Speaker.

According to the party leadership, Tayebwa’s endorsement was partly aimed at maintaining the precedent where a Deputy Speaker is allowed to serve two terms.

Todwong said Tayebwa’s mobilisation skills, political experience, and youthful leadership made him the ideal candidate for the position.

The endorsements now pave the way for the NRM parliamentary caucus to formally back the two leaders ahead of the anticipated parliamentary elections for the top House positions.
