“How does a doctor that works for you go days without brushing, bathing and changing clothes?” the statement asks, before comparing the quarantine experience to detention conditions. “Is your quarantine some kind of Guantanamo Bay?”
Medical doctors quarantined after being exposed to Ebola while carrying out their duties have appealed to the government to provide support to their families and improve conditions at quarantine facilities.
The appeal emerged through a social media message reportedly shared by one of the quarantined doctors or a close relative. The message highlights what the authors describe as difficult and degrading conditions faced by healthcare workers who have been isolated after risking their lives in the fight against the deadly virus.
According to the appeal, some quarantined doctors have gone for days without access to basic necessities such as toothbrushes, clean clothes, bathing facilities, food supplies, and other essential hygiene items.
The message was directed to the Ministry of Health, the Uganda Police Force, and other government agencies involved in the Ebola response.
“When you take a practicing doctor and husband of the house for quarantine, kindly support his wife and kids,” the message reads. “Inform the family about your imposition prior and at least give the quarantined doctors changing clothes, food and cleaning supplies.”
The appeal questions how healthcare professionals serving on the frontlines of disease outbreaks could be subjected to conditions where they reportedly spend days without brushing their teeth, bathing, or changing clothes.

The concerns come as Uganda continues to rely heavily on medical personnel to contain and respond to Ebola outbreaks. Health workers are among the most vulnerable groups during epidemics because of their direct contact with infected patients.

The doctors are now urging authorities not only to ensure humane treatment and adequate supplies within quarantine facilities but also to extend financial and social support to families left behind when healthcare workers are suddenly isolated.
As of publication, the Ministry of Health had not publicly responded to the specific allegations contained in the social media appeal.
The development has sparked discussion online, with many Ugandans expressing sympathy for healthcare workers and calling for improved welfare measures for frontline responders during public health emergencies.
Current Ebola Situation Update
Health authorities have reported a total of 19 confirmed Ebola cases, including 14 imported cases from the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) and 5 Ugandan nationals. Of these, 13 patients are currently receiving treatment and medical care in designated health facilities.
There have been 4 successful recoveries, with patients fully recovering and being discharged from treatment centers. However, the outbreak has also resulted in 2 reported deaths.
Quarantine and Isolation Measures
To prevent further spread of the virus, health officials have implemented strict contact-tracing and monitoring procedures. Anyone identified as a direct contact of a confirmed Ebola patient is required to undergo a mandatory 21-day quarantine and follow-up monitoring period. This measure allows health workers to quickly identify and manage any new infections, helping to protect communities and contain the outbreak.
