Lukwago is expected to appear before a Kampala court after reports indicated that the Director of Public Prosecutions had approved treason-related charges against him.

Former Kampala Lord Mayor and People’s Front for Freedom (PFF) president Erias Lukwago has been transferred to police custody at Kira Division Police Headquarters after spending two days in detention following his arrest by security operatives at his home in Wakaliga.
On Wednesday, supporters and PFF leaders gathered at Kira Division Police Station hoping to see Lukwago after reports emerged that he had been moved from military detention.
Among those at the station was former Kampala Deputy Lord Mayor Doreen Nyanjura, who said Lukwago was still recording a statement with investigators by midday. She noted that he was being accompanied by a legal team led by senior lawyer Medard Lubega Sseggona.
“They told us we would be able to see him at 1:00pm,” Nyanjura said.

Meanwhile, police officers dispersed supporters and journalists who had gathered outside the station, citing congestion. One officer told the crowd that their presence was discouraging other members of the public from accessing services at the facility.
Lukwago’s detention has drawn widespread public attention since his arrest on June 15. The former Kampala Lord Mayor, who also serves as one of Dr Kizza Besigye’s lawyers, was reportedly picked up by armed security operatives and taken to an undisclosed location.
Chief of Defence Forces Gen. Muhoozi Kainerugaba later confirmed that he had ordered the operation. In the days that followed, he posted several messages and photographs of Lukwago on X before announcing that the opposition leader would be handed over to the police.
