Meanwhile, Susan Joan Alobo, an official from the ministry, said government will continue monitoring the welfare of Ugandans living abroad and provide support where necessary.
The Ugandan government has successfully evacuated 1,130 Ugandan nationals from South Africa following a directive by Acting Foreign Affairs Minister, Haruna Kasolo Kyeyune.
Speaking during a press briefing, Minister Kasolo said the evacuation exercise was carried out after many Ugandans living in South Africa appealed to the government for assistance due to difficult conditions they were facing.
The minister explained that the repatriation exercise was conducted in collaboration with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Uganda High Commission in South Africa, and other government agencies.

According to Kasolo, the returnees arrived in Uganda on June 30, 2026, aboard a chartered flight organized by the government. Upon arrival, they were received by officials and taken through registration and screening processes before being assisted to reconnect with their families.
The minister revealed that the government spent approximately sh250m on the evacuation exercise, which included transport, documentation, and other logistical costs.
He emphasized that the government remains committed to protecting Ugandan citizens living abroad and urged those facing serious challenges in foreign countries to contact the nearest Ugandan embassy or consulate for assistance instead of resorting to dangerous or illegal means.

Kasolo also cautioned Ugandans planning to seek employment overseas to use licensed labour recruitment companies and ensure they have proper documentation before travelling.
Meanwhile, Susan Joan Alobo, an official from the ministry, said government will continue monitoring the welfare of Ugandans living abroad and provide support where necessary.
The minister concluded by noting that the government is strengthening measures to improve labour migration systems and protect Ugandan migrant workers from exploitation in foreign countries.
