Matembe has been today arraigned before the Luzira Grade One Magistrate’s Court, where she was formally charged and remanded to Luzira Prison until July 1, 2026.
A 73-year-old former Uganda Ethics and Integrity Minister, Miria Matembe, has been formally charged with promoting sectarianism over remarks she allegedly made on an online media platform.
According to the charge sheet issued by Uganda Police, Matembe is accused of making the statements in June 2026 while in Nakawa Division, Kampala District, during an appearance on the DK TV Uganda platform. Prosecutors allege that she claimed government tax revenue was being spent on women ministers from the Banyankole tribe.
Police contend that the remarks were likely to promote hostility, hatred, or ill will against members of the Banyankole community. She has been charged under Section 38(1)(d) of the Penal Code.

The charge sheet, referenced as CRB 638/2026 and dated June 30, 2026, states that the Director of Public Prosecutions consented to the prosecution before the case was presented in court.
Matembe has been today arraigned before the Luzira Grade One Magistrate’s Court, where she was formally charged and remanded to Luzira Prison until July 1, 2026. The court is expected to hear and determine her bail application on that date.
