Rev. Fr. Bruno Bisangwa, of St. Joseph’s Parish Mpigi, has urged Ugandans to strive to leave a meaningful legacy before death.

“Death challenges us all—when, where, and how we shall meet it. Though it is inevitable, we must organize our lives by doing good in our communities and to our neighbors. Some people die and are quickly forgotten, but those who make a positive impact are always remembered,” Fr. Bisangwa said.

He made the remarks on Sunday while leading a burial mass for Kalisiti Terwanire, an elder from Bboza Village in Mpigi Town Council, Mpigi District. Terwanire passed away at the age of 71 after battling a prolonged illness for more than seven years.

Fr. Bisangwa criticized lifestyles that lack purpose, noting that some people live lavishly but neglect their responsibilities, including raising and nurturing children.

“How do you wish to be remembered? If you have children, have you educated and guided them into becoming responsible citizens, or have you left them as a burden to society? A parent whose children disturb the peace of others has lived in vain and should not expect a positive legacy,” he said.

He added that even a snail leaves a visible trail, urging people to reflect on the kind of impact they leave behind.

“It is unfortunate to live and pass on without anything to show for your existence. Some people neither build families nor contribute meaningfully to society despite engaging in countless relationships,” he said.

Fr. Bisangwa also faulted those who fail to make simple contributions such as planting trees or, for scholars, writing books—acts that could leave a lasting impact.

“This kind of death reminds us not to waste time. We must be mindful of the legacy we create in our communities. Death is real and inevitable,” he emphasized.

Despite his critique, Fr. Bisangwa praised the deceased as a hardworking man who provided for his family and cared for his grandchildren.

“One of his grandchildren, Sheilah, is a member of this choir that has made this burial mass remarkable. This shows he not only raised his children but also guided his grandchildren in a Godly path. Even in death, his legacy will live on through them,” he said.

He further urged mourners to use their time wisely, avoid gossip and negativity, and instead contribute positively to society.

Fr. Bisangwa also called for peace and discipline, especially among the youth, warning that those involved in criminal activities may not receive a dignified send-off.

The widow, Prossy Nakityo Terwanire, thanked those who supported the family during her husband’s illness and attended the burial.

A paternal uncle, Henry Nsubuga, commended the family for caring for the deceased during his long illness, noting that he died a fulfilled man.

“This is a difficult moment for all of us. Your grief shows how much you loved him. Let us thank God for the time he granted him on earth and pray for his eternal rest,” he said.

The deceased’s children also expressed gratitude to mourners for their support during the challenging time.
