An unnamed man said to have been a security guard at Nakabago zone, Ntaawo ward in Mukono Central division, was last night shot dead as he attempted to steal a power battery from a grader belonging to M/S Stirling Construction Co. Ltd parked at the contractor’s base at Nakabago.

The dead man was in the company of his unidentified accomplice who fled on realising that his friend had been shot. The same company is said to have lost batteries from graders last week in similar circumstances and it is suspected that the duo was behind the theft.

M/S Stirling Construction are undertaking construction of the World Bank-funded Greater Kampala Metropolitan Area Nasuuti-Nakabago Ntaawo road and they set up a mini camp at Nakabago at the Bishop Kazimba Junction where they keep their machinery.

The deceased and his ally proceeded to the camp at around 2:00am to vandalise the grader not knowing that there was an armed security guard on duty.

They are then said to have unscrewed the two batteries and were starting to go away with their loot when the security guard shot and killed the deceased. His friend fled uninjured.

According to onlookers who arrived before police removed the body, said he has been a security guard at a piggery farm in Nambaga village, and that the farm owner has been complaining of continued thefts of his animals despite the presence of an askari.

Villagers say he has been in the habit of selling carcasses of pigs to pork sellers in the area, though nobody could clearly tell where he has been getting the pigs from.

Police arrived in the early morning hours and took the body to Mulago Hospital Mortuary for postmortem examination.
