Grief has engulfed teachers and students of Mwebaza High School in Kakiri, Wakiso District, after a bus transporting students for an educational trip collided with a train, leaving three students dead and several others injured.

The students were travelling to Jinja for a study tour aboard a Friendship Company bus, registration number UAU 123Q, when the accident occurred at the Namumira railway crossing along the Mukono–Katosi-Nyenga Road.

The crash happened at around 12:30 a.m. on Friday.

The injured students were trapped inside the bus before being rescued and rushed by ambulances to various hospitals for treatment. The bodies of the deceased students were recovered from the wreckage and taken to the Mulago City Mortuary for postmortem examination.

Efforts to obtain a comment from the school administration were unsuccessful by the time this report was compiled, as school officials were still dealing with the aftermath of the tragedy and accounting for the students’ safety.

Eyewitnesses and first responders blamed the accident on the bus driver, alleging that he was driving recklessly and failed to obey road signs at the railway crossing. They said the driver proceeded onto the railway line despite warning signs, resulting in the collision with the oncoming train.
