A mother who was left devastated after losing her home during a demolition exercise has been given a lifeline after a prominent businessman donated land and committed to building a new house for her family.

Nuliat Nakanaabi, whose heartbreaking story captured national attention, is set to begin a new chapter after receiving a 50-by-100-feet plot in Jandira Kyasa Village, Kayabwe Town Council, Mpigi District. The land was donated by businessman Deus Ssali, the proprietor of Bassali Property Consultants.

Nakanaabi became widely known following the demolition of her house in Kawaala during an operation by the National Environment Management Authority (NEMA), which targeted structures located within a protected wetland buffer zone. The exercise left her and her children without shelter and struggling to cope with an uncertain future.

In the aftermath of the demolition, Nakanaabi reached a point of despair and reportedly considered stepping into traffic with her seven-year-old son. The tragic act was averted when the boy intervened and persuaded his mother not to carry out her plan.

Touched by the family’s ordeal, Ssali stepped forward to offer assistance.

Speaking during the land handover ceremony, Ssali said he was deeply affected by Nakanaabi’s suffering and felt compelled to help despite having no prior connection to her.

“I understand the pain of losing a home, and I could not stand by while this family continued to suffer,” he said.

Nakanaabi was taken to view two plots of land and allowed to choose the one she preferred. Upon seeing the property, she became emotional, expressing gratitude through prayer and songs of praise.

She described the donation as a blessing that restored her hope after weeks of uncertainty and fear about where she would live together with her children.

In an even bigger gesture, Ssali announced that he would personally fund the construction of a three-bedroom house on the newly acquired land, ensuring the family has a permanent place to call home.

He also presented Nakanaabi’s son with a bicycle, praising the youngster for preventing his mother from making a life-ending decision during one of the darkest moments of her life.

Following the ceremony, the parties met local council officials, where a formal agreement transferring ownership of the land to Nakanaabi was signed and witnessed by community leaders. Residents and supporters who attended the event celebrated the occasion as a symbol of hope and compassion.

Ssali urged fellow Ugandans with the means to help others to support vulnerable people before their situations become unbearable.

Nakanaabi’s experience is among many stories that emerged after recent demolition operations in Kawaala displaced several families living in protected wetland areas. Since then, a number of well-wishers, including Prime Minister Robinah Nabbanja, have extended support to those affected.

For Nakanaabi and her children, the donation marks more than just the acquisition of land—it represents a fresh start, renewed stability, and the promise of a brighter future.
