The National Youth Chaplain of the Uganda Episcopal Conference, Fr. Benedict Mugerwa, has urged Ugandans not to focus only on the controversies surrounding former Speaker of Parliament Anita Annet Among, but also to remember the positive contributions she has made to communities and the Church.

Fr. Mugerwa said that although Among is currently facing widespread criticism and negative public attention, many people should also acknowledge her generosity and willingness to support those in need.

He noted that the former Speaker had consistently contributed to community development projects and church activities through donations made willingly and without conditions.

The priest made the remarks while leading Sunday Mass at St. Andrew Kaggwa Kichwa Mpoma Parish in Nama sub-county, Mukono District, during celebrations marking Pentecost Sunday, which he described as the “birthday of the Church.”

During his sermon, Fr. Mugerwa encouraged Christians to make proper use of the gifts of the Holy Spirit for personal growth and the betterment of their communities.

“It is unfortunate that some people become proud simply because God has blessed them with one or two gifts that make them stand out. We should use the gifts God has given us for our own good, the good of our neighbours, and our communities,” he said.

He also criticised Christians who become wealthy but fail to support God’s work or assist others despite having the ability to do so.

“She has supported church work and several community projects through generous donations, unlike some leaders who are not concerned at all,” he said.

The priest also used the occasion to pray for and bless children returning to school for the second term, which resumes on Monday.

He concluded the Mass by sprinkling the children with holy water as parents and congregants looked on.
