As unemployment continues to bite in Uganda, many young people—both skilled and unskilled—are finding it increasingly difficult to secure formal employment, even years after completing their education.
The situation has left many graduates frustrated and uncertain about their future. In recent years, hundreds of youths have resorted to selling portions of their families’ ancestral land to finance travel to Middle East countries, particularly the United Arab Emirates, in search of jobs, often unrelated to their academic qualifications. Some have even lost their lives while pursuing such opportunities.
Faced with similar challenges, Shanita Ankunda, a graduate with a Bachelor’s Degree in Accounting and Finance, has turned to social media in a last-ditch effort to find employment.
Using her X (formerly Twitter) account, Ankunda publicly appealed for help from fellow users to amplify her message and increase her chances of finding a job opportunity.
