Eight Line Up to Replace Outgoing West Buganda Bishop

As the Bishop for West Buganda diocese, Rt. Rev. Henry Katumba Tamale gets set to hang boots in March, the bid to replace him is gaining heat, with a list of eight people out of whom to choose a successor, drawn up.

The eight short listed include; Rev. Samuel Matovu, the headteacher of Ssembabule Senior Secondary School, Rev. Can. Moses Kayimba, the secretary for West Buganda Diocese, Rev. Can. Herbert Matovu, the diocesan treasurer, Rev. Nuwagaba, a headmaster of a primary school in Lyantonde, and Rev. Tebasoboke, attached to the health department of Mityana diocese.

Others are; Ven. Can. Gaster Nsereko, the Archdeacon of Kakoma, Rev. Festo kalungi, the parish priest for Kira in Namirembe Diocese, and Ven. Can. Patrick Ssimbwa, the Archdeacon for Ssembabule Archdeaconry.

Out of these, two names will be sent to the House of Bishops due to convene on 20th February 2025, which has the discretion to finally decide who will become the next Bishop for West Buganda.

Reliable sources indicate that the nominations committee which sat on Monday in a highly closed meeting at Hotel Brovad in Masaka, under the guidance of the Diocesan Legal Advisor Stanley Kawalya came out with the aforementioned details.

The elected bishop for the diocese is due to be inaugurated on 3rd March 2025 at Kako. Bishop Tamale assumed office on 28th August 2016, and will have clocked the mandatory retirement age of 65, after service for nine years.

West Buganda Diocese was formed in 1960 concurrently with the diocese of Busoga, Namirembe, Ankole, Bunyoro-Kitara and Northern Uganda. It was chartered out of the Uganda Diocese in 1960.

Bishop Tamale took over from Bishop Geoffrey Makumbi in 2015, who followed Dr. Samuel Kamya Ssemakula in 2011. Dr. Kamya followed Dr. Christopher Ssenyonjo in 1997, who succeeded Bp. Stephen Tomusange in 1973. Bishop Festo Lutaaya was the first Bishop who headed the diocese from 1960 to 1971.
