Police Recover Sh50m After Dramatic Chase of Suspected Thieves in Mubende

During the escape, the suspects reportedly dropped a bag containing sh50m together with the sack carrying the number plates before disappearing into an unknown location.

Police in Mubende District have launched investigations into a theft case involving unidentified suspects who allegedly broke into a vehicle and stole sh100m before abandoning part of the cash while fleeing from security officers during a high-speed pursuit.

According to a crime report issued by Lameck Kigozi, the Wamala Region Police Spokesperson, the incident happened on May 21, 2026, at around 5:00 PM at Kalonga Trading Centre in Kalonga sub-county.

Kigozi said the suspects, who were travelling in a white Toyota Premio registration number UAP 811H, allegedly broke into a parked Toyota Rumion registration number UBR 308A and stole a laptop bag containing the cash.

Police said the money had earlier been withdrawn from Centenary Bank Mubende Branch and was being transported back to Kalonga Trading Centre. The victim reportedly parked the vehicle briefly and entered a nearby shop, only to return moments later and discover that the car had been broken into and the money stolen.

Police were immediately alerted and launched a pursuit using the victim’s vehicle. The chase reportedly extended towards Kitenga as officers closed in on the suspects.

“As the pursuit intensified, the suspects abandoned their vehicle and fled on foot,” Kigozi said in the report.

He added that one suspect escaped carrying the laptop bag, while another fled with a white sack containing three different number plates believed to have been used interchangeably to evade detection.

Police recovered the abandoned Toyota Premio, the sh50m cash, and the three suspected fake number plates. Statements from witnesses and victims have since been recorded.

Investigations are ongoing as security agencies continue efforts to trace and arrest the suspects.

Police have also urged members of the public to exercise caution after withdrawing large sums of money from banks, warning that criminals often disguise themselves as ordinary customers in order to identify and trail potential targets.
