St. Elizabeth’s Institute of Health Professionals (SELIHEP) in Mukono is set to hold its sixth graduation ceremony on July 4, celebrating students who have successfully completed training in various health disciplines.

According to the institute’s principal, Ruth Nagawa, the graduands will receive diplomas and certificates in Clinical Medicine, Medical Technology, Pharmacy, Nursing, Midwifery, and Medical Laboratory Technology.

Sr. Rose Kimali Nabukwasi, the Principal of the School of Nursing and Midwifery, said the institution is accredited to conduct examinations on its own premises, unlike many other institutions that must send students to external examination centres.

“The examinations are administered by the Allied Health Examinations Board. Due to the high standards maintained by our students, they have consistently excelled in these examinations, enabling us to produce competent and fully qualified health professionals,” Sr. Nabukwasi said.

She added that graduates from the institution are highly sought after by employers because of the quality of training they receive.

“Over the years, we have built a strong reputation in health training. Many of our graduates secure employment soon after completing their studies rather than spending long periods searching for jobs,” she said.

She noted that students are exposed to practical training while still pursuing their studies through placements in some of the country’s leading health facilities.

“Our students undertake clinical placements at health facilities such as Mukono General Hospital, St. Francis Naggalama Hospital, Kawolo General Hospital, Jinja Regional Referral Hospital, among others. The institute provides transport to and from these facilities to ensure that students gain hands-on experience in real working environments,” she explained.

Students have also praised the quality of training offered by the institution.

Alexander Ayebare, a third-year pharmacy student pursuing a diploma in his second semester, described his experience at the institute as rewarding.

“My stay at St. Elizabeth’s has been tremendous. We have experienced tutors who dedicate their time to ensuring that we are well-prepared for excellence in our careers,” he said.

Located in Ggulu Cell, Mukono Central Division, near the Kyaggwe Ssaza headquarters, St. Elizabeth’s Institute of Health Professionals opened its doors on October 25, 2005, with the aim of training competent healthcare workers.

The institute started with just 14 students and a single Certificate in Medical Laboratory course. Over the years, it has grown into a fully licensed tertiary healthcare training institution offering a wide range of medical programmes and producing skilled health professionals for Uganda’s healthcare sector.
