Kampala — Former Kampala Lord Mayor Erias Lukwago is receiving medical treatment at Mulago National Referral Hospital under military guard after court directed prison authorities to facilitate his access to specialized healthcare.
Lukwago, who is facing a charge of misprision of treason, was recently remanded to Luzira Prison by the Makindye Chief Magistrate after his application for bail was denied.
During the bail hearing, Lukwago’s legal team argued that he should be released on medical grounds, citing his deteriorating health. However, the magistrate ruled that the seriousness of the offence outweighed the grounds advanced for his temporary release.
Instead, the court directed the Uganda Prisons Service to ensure that Lukwago is transported to Mulago National Referral Hospital whenever necessary to receive appropriate medical treatment while remaining in lawful custody.

The magistrate also ordered that Lukwago’s wife and one of his lawyers be granted access to him at all reasonable times during his treatment.
Sources indicate that Lukwago is currently admitted under military guard, with access to his hospital room restricted to his wife and legal counsel in line with the court’s directives.
Lukwago was arrested at his home in Wakaliga by uniformed officers attached to the Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF). At the time of his arrest, he was serving as legal counsel to retired opposition figure Dr. Kizza Besigye and other co-accused persons facing treason-related charges.
The case against Lukwago remains before the courts as investigations and legal proceedings continue.
