It was a shocking experience to many of the Ugandans seeing the Indian Nationals burning to ashes the body of their colleague who was on Friday shot dead by a policeman. The body of Uttam Bhandari (37) who was shot dead by a police officer PC Ivan Wabwire was taken through the cultures of the Indians which require burning it to ashes.
With a lot of sorrow, Bhandari’s relatives and friends including those who came from India specifically for this function, they performed a number of rituals which were crowned by laying the body on the table from where it was set on fire burning to ashes. A number of the Indians condemned the gun violence which is currently the order of the day in the country.
Sanjay Tana, the Tororo former Member of Parliament said the NRM government in Uganda demystified the gun in a way that people no-longer fear people with the guns.
“In Kenya, Rwanda and Tanzania, people fear guns. But in Uganda, someone can easily confront a person holding a gun,” Sanjay said.
He added: “Therefore, gun violence must be condemned by the strongest terms. The Police and President Museveni condemned the gruesome murder of Uttam. We are happy that Police have arrested the suspect as he tried to cross to Kenya, we pray that justice prevails.” He said that Uttam left behind a two-year-old child and a wife.
Rajni Tailor, the former Buganda Minister also consoled the family and friends of Uttam. Tailor asked the government to deploy well trained policemen on Forex bureaus and banks other than the current situations where it’s only the private security guards.
Uttam was the director of TFS Financial Services at Raja Chambers on Parliamentary Avenue in Kampala and it’s believed that he had borrowed Wabwire over sh2,130,000 in 2020 and failure to agree on the repayment plan is said to have been the spark of the murder.
