As the political atmosphere is just gaining momentum ahead of 2026 general elections, religious leaders under Mukono diocese have been warned to avoid granting space to politicians to campaign in churches.

The warning has been served by the Bishop of Mukono diocese, Enos Kitto Kagodo while delivering his Easter message to the Christians who turned up in numbers at Sts. Philip and Andrew’s Cathedral in Mukono Municipality.

Bp. Kagodo said that though politicians as part of the congregation are welcome in churches for prayers, they should not be granted space for making politics of divisions because it is a platform for everybody despite of political affiliation.

The bishop also warned Ugandans intending to vie for different political offices in the 2026 general elections to avoid selling off family property to finance their campaigns.

Bp. Kagodo said that due to the monetisation of politics today, from the recent campaigns, a number of politicians were put in positions that forced them to sell their property to gain finances to support their campaigns.

“Unfortunately, I learnt of one of those who after selling off all of his property including family house, he again lost the election and ended up suffering. He died of recent but a very poor man which was not his status before joining politics,” he said.

On the side of the electorates, Bp. Kagodo asked them to also take their time to look through different candidates and come out with one who is of value and substance.

“Some candidates are not worth standing for political offices. I observed some during the Kawempe North by-election who were seriously lacking political substance. Unfortunately, voters sometimes end up voting for such characters!” he cautioned.

Bp. Kagodo also called upon men to take up their responsibilities and avoid abandoning them to their wives.

“Men are the heads of families, unfortunately, many have abandoned their responsibilities. Though some end up running away from their families, others are their but in actual sense they are missing because even in their presence, it’s their wives taking on all their responsibilities,” he said.

For those suffering with a number of problems including chronical sickness, poverty among others, Bp. Kagodo asked them to avoid running to witchdoctors who end up messing up their lives but to put their trust to risen Jesus Christ who is the Alpha and Omega.

He also thanked Christians who are wholeheartedly fundraising money for the construction of the new Cathedral. The new cathedral which the Archbishop of the Church of Uganda, Stephen Kazimba Mugalu laid its foundation block in 2024 requires over sh7bn for its completion.
