Mukono Municipality Member of Parliament Betty Nambooze Bakireke has been elected to lead the parliamentary caucus of the National Unity Platform (NUP), following a decision by party legislators that saw her assume the position unopposed.

In her acceptance remarks, Nambooze expressed gratitude for the confidence placed in her by colleagues, describing her new role as one of “complementary leadership” aimed at fostering coordination and unity within the opposition caucus in Parliament.

She pledged to work closely under the Leader of Opposition and in collaboration with parliamentary whips and the caucus commissioner, emphasizing teamwork in shaping legislative strategy, coordinating positions in the House, and strengthening grassroots engagement.

“Our leadership will be tested in the Kalangala by-election,” she noted, referring to the upcoming contest to replace the late MP Hellen Nakimuli. She rallied support behind the party’s candidate, Irene Nampala, calling for full mobilisation ahead of the vote]ing excercise in Kalangala District.

Nambooze reaffirmed the caucus’ commitment to the party’s manifesto, New Uganda Now, and referenced the leadership of party president Bobi Wine, saying legislators have a duty to promote alternatives and keep citizens engaged in the opposition’s political agenda.

She also urged colleagues to avoid internal competition over parliamentary committee assignments, stressing that all committees are important and effectiveness depends on contribution rather than position.

“Let us guard against turning into competitors just because we operate in the same space,” she said, warning against fragmentation and encouraging unity and alignment with party structures.

The newly elected caucus leader further called for transparent and accountable leadership within the opposition parliamentary team, urging members to remain disciplined, coordinated, and committed to serving both the party and the electorate.

Nambooze concluded by emphasizing that the strength of the caucus lies in collective action: “Let’s serve as one.”
